Yesterday I was presented with a problem. It is a common problem that everyone who tries to buy fresh local food encounters at some point…how to use all your food before it spoils.
If you have read our previous posts, you know that we went a little crazy on our apple picking excursion. Like 30 lbs crazy. Even though I have been cooking with apples everyday and even eating them for snacks…today I came to the realization that at my current rate of consumption my apples would spoil before I used them all. This brought up another issue that I am sure you have all encountered as well…I absolutely hate to waste food. I eat everything I make…including all the “mess ups” when testing new recipes!
In an effort to use the rest of the apples from my apple picking adventure, I decided to make applesauce! However, since I was feeling lazy, I decided to make it in the slow cooker. I have to admit that it surprised me how easy it was to make homemade applesauce in the slow cooker. It took almost no effort on my part and the result was delicious. All I did was core, peel and cut my apples into cubes. I put them in the slow cooker with a little honey and cinnamon and walked away. And behold…8 hours later…applesauce! The honey brought out the natural sweetness of the honey and the hint of cinnamon brought the whole thing together nicely.
I hope you enjoy this easy and delicious recipe!
